Arthroscopic Knee Meniscus Repair
About Arthroscopic Knee Meniscus Repair
An arthroscopic knee meniscectomy is an outpatient procedure during which the torn piece of meniscus is either repaired or removed through small puncture holes. In cases where the tear is so severe that all or almost all of the meniscus cartilage must be removed, a meniscus transplant may be needed. This involves planting a new cartilage ring from a tissue bank in the knee. The transplant is performed with arthroscopic assistance, using small incisions.
Rehabilitation time for a meniscectomy is approximately three to four weeks. Rehabilitation time for a meniscus transplant is about three months. Meniscus tears are extremely common knee injuries. With proper diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation, patients often return to their pre-injury abilities.
